Tuesday Crit Race Report
Date: 8/12/03
This week, 14 laps (~28 miles), still racing with the B group.
(that's me in the white jersey and blue helmet)
This week the pace was a little slower because some of the main agitators were racing with the A's. There's a 3/4 mile upwind section, and i noticed our pace was falling each time around. With 4 laps to go, I ended up a few yards off the front with two other guys, and the group didn't seem to be worried. So I told them we should attack on the hill and we'd get away. We attacked, and we got a gap. One guy bridged across to us, and we lost one, so 3 of us were away.
Now, the A's had already lapped us, and it turned out that when they did, a couple of B's used them to get ahead (a no-no!). Anyway, with about two laps to go, we discovered this, but we were able to pull them in. The other initial attacker fell off the back, so now we're four with a lap to go.
I hit the hill hard again, just to see how guys were doing. Two guys came with me, one was toast. On the backstretch (upwind), another guy managed to bridge up from the pack-- guess we weren't that far ahead, although I couldn't see anyone when I looked back. I hung on the back and tried to attack from the back with about 0.5 mi to go. I swung out wide left, but didn't hit it with as much speed as I'd wanted to. One guy came with me. I relaxed and let him take the lead. With about 1/4 mi. to go, he jumped and I couldn't go with him. I sprinted hard and conserved my 2nd place finish.
Oh, then afterwards, I played the role of Sparks at HWO:
Lynx lost
M&S won
Google won
Got my bell rung in the Lynx game and I'm a little stiff today.
